Silymarin and phospholipids used jointly for the comprehensive protection of the liver

When do you reach for liver protection preparations?

The liver is a large organ located in the upper right section of the abdominal cavity. It serves many life-critical functions related to synthesis, metabolism and storage of compounds created or introduced from the outside. Each day the liver is affected by a great number of factors. Some of them may lead to damage of the organ.

These conditions usually does not have any symptoms, since the liver has no nervous system. Functional disorders of the organ can be experienced through feeling bad, overall fatigue and exhaustion. Disorders of liver functions also result in digestive problems, like flatulence, a sense of heaviness, stomach ache and nausea. Blood tests reveal elevated concentrations of hepatic enzymes (ALT and AST) along with bilirubin.

Over time, changes may occur in the structure of the organ, leading to steatosis and fibrosis, or cirrhosis. The greatest threats to the liver include:

  • alcohol abuse;
  • chronic use or abuse of pharmaceutical drugs;
  • exposure to toxic chemicals;
  • bacteria, parasites or viruses which cause hepatitis (especially type B and C hepatitis);
  • cholestasis, a condition caused by complete or partial obstruction of the bile ducts;
  • high-fat diet which modifies the bile composition.

Plant extracts which shield the liver

Among plant substances with hepatoprotective action, the compound that undoubtedly enjoys the widest knowledge by clinical trial is silymarin isolated from Sylibum marianum. A lot of research has also been carried out on phospholipids, which are isolated from soy seeds. Other substances which improve functioning of the liver include artichoke extracts, common agrimony herb, yarrow herb, common dandelion root, Hypericum perforatum herb and Chelidonium majus herb.

Sylibum marianum

The medicinal properties of Sylibum marianum were already known in ancient times (as described by Theophrastus in the 4th age B.C.). The pharmaceutically active part of the plant is the roots from which a complex of flavonolignans is extracted called silymarin (with silybin being the most important of flavonolignans). The compounds shield the liver cells (hepatocytes) from toxic agents and facilitate regeneration of the organ when it is damaged. Silymarin is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory action; it also inhibits fibrosis and the penetration of toxins into the liver cells. The compound stimulates synthesis of proteins in damaged organs and reduces the bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Scientific papers suggest that silymarin also has anti-rheumatic and antitumour activity.

Soy phospholipids (Glycine max)

The phospholipids from soy seeds are esters of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In oral administration, the compounds are absorbed into the blood stream and then embedded into the biological membranes to increase their fluidity and stimulate cell membrane transport. In the case of the liver, it is called stabilisation of hepatocyte membranes. Clinical trials have confirmed the efficacy of phospholipids in the treatment of fatty degeneration and hepatitis caused by alcohol abuse and viral infections (mainly hepatitis C). Similar to silymarin, phospholipids are beneficial to cholesterol levels and increase solubility of bad cholesterol in the bile ducts; hence they prevent deposition of cholesterol.

Silymarin and phospholipids in one drug

The unique combination of two substances with documented hepatoprotective and hepatoregenerative action is found in the preparation Syliflex®. One tablet contains 100 mg of the silymarin-phospholipids complex with 30% of flavonolignans (on the basis of silybin) and 1.5% of phosphorus. This composition is beneficial to health and ensures an optimum therapeutic effect by employing two different mechanisms of organic compounds, silymarin and soy phospholipids.

Administration of Syliflex®

It is a common mistake of patients who take liver protection preparations to disregard the rules of administration. The preparations should be taken in three doses a day after meals. Depending on the intensity of the problem, 1 or 2 tablets are taken at a time with the dosage regime of 3 x 1 or 3 x 2. Treatment in chronic conditions should last at least 2 to 3 months.

Contraindications and adverse effects of Syliflex®

The preparation is safe and has virtually no adverse effects, making it appropriate for prolonged treatment. It can sometimes cause mild gastrointestinal disorders with a slight laxative effect. It is best taken after meals.

Due to the lack of sufficient trials, Syliflex is not recommended for children below 12 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.
